CHRISTMAS IN COPENHAGEN! The most beautiful Christmas markets in Europe.

Walking the streets of Copenhagen at Christmas time is one of the things to do once in a lifetime! The magic of the Scandinavian festivals will transport you and put stars in your eyes..

Beyond the superb Christmas markets that you find in the city, the atmosphere and charm of Copenhagen at Christmas is magical. Smell the smell of Glögg (Scandinavian mulled wine) all over the city, be amazed by all the illuminations, eat kannelbullar to warm up from the bitter cold and experience the sunset at 3 p.m. .. all these things combined make Copenhagen an ideal destination to experience fabulous Christmas celebrations.

In this blog I will share with you the best Christmas markets in the city, as well as good addresses and advice to make your trip a successful experience in a unique atmosphere of Nordic festivities.

Christmas decorations in Tivoli, Copenhagen

TIVOLI:

In the oldest amusement park in the world... this Christmas market is one of the largest and most emblematic in Copenhagen.

Without a doubt, it is with this one that I would start the list of Christmas markets.

Whether for young or old, everyone will be charmed by the Tivoli gardens decorated especially for the end-of-year celebrations. Here you can stroll among the colorful stalls, discover local artisans, and warm up with a hot drink while enjoying the illuminated rides and magical Christmas shows. There are several stands, illuminations throughout the park, the smell of caramelized sweets or Glögg to warm up mulled wine lovers! Enough to wander around this huge funfair surrounded by hundreds of light garlands, huge fir trees, and Christmas music!

The +: To extend the evening you will find the Tivoli food court with several food stands, with influences from around the world. In short, plan to have a good time and keep your eyes peeled!

Kongens Nytorv Christmas Market :

This Christmas market is located on Kongens Nytorv square and is one of the largest in the city. This line of wooden chalets offers you different worlds, whether craft stands, culinary specialties and a warm atmosphere. As I slipped through the aisles, the smells of preparations began to whet my appetite.. and look at this beautiful fillet of salmon cooking above the flames..

This is what the Kongens market can offer you, smells that go in all directions, Glögg*, through hot soup, meat and fish cooked on site, or even sweets sweet smells of darlings or æbleskiver which are the sweet Danish specialties for the holidays: these are small balls of sweet dough, like small donuts , which are generally served with mulled wine and red fruit jam.

ANDERSEN MARKET / Højbro Plads Christmas Market :

Andersen Market is a popular Christmas market in Copenhagen, located on Højbro Plads square, next to the famous 'Strøget' shopping street. This market takes its name from the Danish author Hans Christian Andersen, famous for his fairy tales.

It offers a warm and festive atmosphere with stalls selling handicrafts, Christmas decorations, gifts, Danish culinary specialties, hot drinks and much more.

Visitors to Andersen Market can wander among wooden chalets decorated with twinkling lights, listen to Christmas songs, and enjoy the magical atmosphere of the holiday season. It's a great place to do some Christmas shopping and enjoy traditional foods while enjoying the beauty of Copenhagen during the Christmas period. The market is generally open from the beginning of December until Christmas.

The MORE of Copenhagen at Christmas:

To take advantage of the end-of-year facilities you can also find2 ice rinks in Copenhagen.

That of Broens, just opposite the Broens Gadekøkken food courts, which I obviously recommend, if you want to share a friendly, gourmet and hassle-free moment. You will find the famous burgers from Gasoline, the Tacos from Hija de Sanchez, or the poke bowls from Hooked and many others!

and that of FrederiksbergRunddel, more eccentric but just as pleasant. You can find it at the entrance to the Frederiskberg gardens and it is free.

NYHAVN:

The iconic port of Copenhagen, and if you've never been there, I think it's the perfect place to go on your first visit to the city. And every time I go there, it's one of the first things I do.

For the end of year celebrations, the edge of Nyhavn is brought to life with pretty light garlands as well as numerous stands selling hot drinks, waffles etc.. it's a pleasant walk to take when the sun goes down, to admire the boats lighting up little by little.

PRACTICAL INFORMATION:

  • In winter the sun sets very early in Copenhagen around 3:30 p.m. I therefore advise you to make all outdoor visits before this time to take advantage of the few rays of sunshine during the day and to start your walk in the Christmas markets only mid/late afternoon.

  • Also note that the Christmas markets do not close very late, around 9 p.m.

  • *Glogg: mulled wine made with orange, cinnamon, and cloves, marinated with raisins and almonds, traditional drinks it You absolutely have to taste it.

  • There is an entrance fee toTivoliparks. There are several types of entry, with or without attractions.

And of course, let's not forget the Danish tradition of hygge, which takes on a special dimension during the holidays. Hygge represents this feeling of warmth, friendliness and well-being, and it is particularly present during the Christmas period in Copenhagen. Sit back in a cozy café, enjoy a delicious Danish pastry and enjoy the cozy atmosphere of the city.Whether you're looking for unique gifts, culinary delights or simply shared moments of joy, Christmas celebrations in Copenhagen offer a truly magical experience. So, I hope that this article has made you want to beat the northern cold to spend a few days at the end of the year in this wonderful city!
